Description

"Pearl of the islands and peninsulas" is how the Roman poet Catullus described the thin headland, which extends up to four kilometers into the lake. On its tip you will find a real treasure: the famous holiday and health resort of Sirmione with its mineral springs.

On the uttermost tip of the peninsula is the archaeological excavation Grotte di Catullo, the remains of a large Roman villa are set in a beautiful countryside.

While Sirmione prospered during the Roman period, it experienced its heyday under the rule of the Scaliger family who built the fortress Rocca Scaligera – still today considered to be one of the most beautiful castles of this time.

Sights: the Scaliger Castle, the church of San Pietro in Mavino, Grotte di Catullo and Solferino.
