On the night of 12 December the children of Verona impatiently await the arrival of Saint Lucia, who brings gifts and sweets. In the meantime, they eat the so-called ” Frolle of Santa Lucia”, a shortbread pastry with icing sugar in various Christmas shapes. It is a traditional pastry and every family has their own recipe which is passed on from generation to generation.

You can find the classic recipe here:

 icon-cutlery  Ingredients:

  • 300 g* flour
  • 150 g butter
  • 130 g sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 untreated lemon
  • icing sugar

 icon-cutlery Preparation:

First cut the butter into small pieces and melt at room temperature, until it can be worked easily. Add the sugar and mix both. Then add the three egg yolks individually and the grated lemon zest. Knead the ingredients well and sieve the flour on top, without it forming lumps. Form a smooth and even ball, cover it with cling film and let it rest for a few hours in the fridge. Then roll out the dough to half a centimetre in thickness, cut out the biscuits and put them on a mold covered with baking paper. Bake them for roughly 12 minutes at 180 degrees in a preheated oven.
